Our kids have long days with school, homework, and activities, so it is important for them to get enough sleep to be recharged and ready to tackle the day ahead.
Elementary school-aged kids should have between 9-12 hours of sleep per night. Here are some tips to make bedtime routine a successful one:
  • Keep to a regular routine. Waking time, meal time, and play time should be the same everyday Brush teeth, take a warm bath or shower, then read a book to calm them before bed (older kids can do 15 minutes of reading on their own).
  • Be active during the day and get sufficient fresh air, but at the same time avoid overscheduling. This may lead to overstimulation and they will require more time to wind down.
  • Monitor screen time and refrain from tv, ipads, etc for at least 1 hour before bedtime.
  • The bed is a place to sleep. Do not fill their beds with toys. They can have one or two security objects, but should not be playing.
  • Keep room cool and dark.
Finally, we all have those crazy mornings where we are fighting with our children to get to school on time. Have them pick their clothes the night before, and have them wake up a few minutes earlier in the morning to avoid any delays.
Winter break is soon. Enjoy the time with your families and rest up!
