Did you know that children in Montreal have more cavities than the rest of Quebec according to the Regional Director of Public Health?

We are always stressing about our children getting sick, and always running from activity to activity, that dental health is often overlooked.  Tooth brushing doesn’t have to be a chore.  Let your kids pick out their own toothbrush and tooth paste to make it more exciting.  Some brushes even come with a timer or a light on them so you know when you brushed enough.  How much toothpaste is enough?  About the size of a pea is sufficient. When the bristles fold outwards, it is time to replace the brush.  Make sure though that they are not brushing too hard!

Brushing should happen in the morning before school, and before going to bed. Often children have activities after school (dance, hockey, etc.) and if you go home to change their clothing, try to start incorporating a tooth brushing there as well when they wash up for their activities.

Sugar-filled snacks and drinks such as soda should be avoided.  Not only are they bad for your health, but bad for dental health as well.

Is your child asthmatic?  Do they take a Flovent inhaler (the orange one)?  If so, they need to rinse their mouths afterwards to prevent mouth ulcers.  Brushing their teeth after the Flovent puffer is even more effective.

Don’t forget to take your child to the dentist twice a year for proper cleaning and dental treatments.  Oral health is important and can affect the rest of your body.  Happy brushing!
